Having a freezer is so handy!  You can stock up on all your favorite foods, and they will keep as fresh as the day you bought them for up to 3 months.

That way you always have a choice about what to eat for each meal and you can go with your cravings rather than always having to use up other fresh food before it turns.

Or you can buy seasonal food on the cheap and make some seriously good meals with them, even when they’re no longer in season.

For those who like to make their meals ahead of time, this is a great option to go for.

You get 7 boxes in the pack, conveniently one for each weekday.  Great for meal planning and for those who are dieting.

Having your frozen food in stackable rectangular boxes really helps with fitting everything in your freezer, and while the bottom of the box is opaque, the lids are all transparent, so you can see exactly what’s in there.

They are fully microwave-safe, so you can take your food straight from the freezer to the microwave (but remember to remove the lid).  And they’re dishwasher safe, so you can use the boxes again and again, and really get your money’s worth out of them.  You get really good value for money.

There’ll be no need for a repeat purchase unless you wanted to make meals more than one week ahead of time or if you needed to prep more than one frozen meal per day.

They are airtight and leak-resistant, so you don’t have to worry about freezer burn or spills.

There’s a divider within each container which dieters might like when looking at their macro portions, say if they wanted to keep their refined carbs low or their fruit and veg high.

Customer feedback is very positive.  On the Amazon page for example, after well over 400 customer ratings the average customer rating comes in at a good 4 stars out of 5.

If you want your food vacuum-sealed, then this is the container to go for!

In this bargain of a deal, you get 2 rolls, each 8 inches wide and 20 feet long.

You put the roll through your vacuum sealer machine (which you can get on Amazon), cut a custom length according to how much food you want to seal, ensure 3 edges are sealed, place your food inside, then vacuum seal.

When you vacuum seal with this roll, specially designed channels block oxygen and moisture to maximize air removal.

Each time you use it, you just use the amount you need, so there is no waste, and you get a good lifespan from each roll.

The beauty of vacuum sealing for freezing your food, is that not only will you never have to worry about freezer burn, but your food can last up to 5 times longer than it otherwise would.  On the Amazon page, there’s a handy chart that tells you just how much longer different foods can last in your freezer with this vacuum sealing system.

We love that the roll features white strips along one side that allow you to write on bags, labelling them as you wish.

You don’t have to use them with FoodSaver’s own brand machine.  These rolls are compatible across the board.

The customer feedback on these rolls is really really positive, after well over 1500 customer ratings, the average Amazon customer rating comes in at 4 and a half stars out of 5.

These reusable bags from Moico are one of Amazon’s best sellers for the category.

They’re made from food-grade silicone which is surprisingly good for the environment.  First of all, you get plenty of use out of them.  They are dishwasher safe and can last up to a whopping 30 years.  And they’re recyclable.  How eco-friendly is that!

They have a great hermetic sealing system that keeps your food airtight, to avoid the dreaded freezer burn.  And they’re not just leak-resistant, they’re leak-proof - great for storing soups or smoothies without any nasty spills to worry about.

In the pack of 5, you get 2 large bags which can hold 1.5 litres and 3 medium bags which can hold a litre each.  (You don’t need anything smaller.)

And better yet, the bags are color-coded.  This is a great way of for example identifying who’s is who’s.  Or if you wanted to make any details clearer, such as the 3-month cut-off date, you can write directly onto the bags.  Or you could label your meals according to your diet schedule.

They’re also microwave-safe, you can take your food straight from the freezer to the microwave, just remember to remove the slider bar before defrosting.

They’re BPA free too, so that’s one less thing to worry about.

We also love that their extra-thick wide bottom means they can stand up on their own, handy for when you’re doing your meal prep.

If you want to go for glass containers, these are hands down the ones to go for.  They are made from borosilicate glass which is much stronger than cheaper containers and is super durable.

They’re flying off the shelves at Amazon, and after well over 5000 customer ratings, the average customer rating comes in at a very impressive 4 and a half stars out of a possible 5.

And not only are they microwave-safe, but they’re also oven safe too.  All you have to do is remember to open the lid’s vent when you want to microwave and remove the lid altogether when you want to oven cook.

Both the glass and the lids are dishwasher safe.  And being glass they’re transparent, you can see exactly what’s there, and the lids are transparent too.  They’re also naturally BPA free.

They feature a lock system, which keeps your food completely airtight, AND is leak-proof too, so they can double as a packed lunch box when not in your freezer.

They’re also stackable, which is great when freezer space is at a premium.

And to top that off, they’re FDA approved.

Best Food Containers For Freezing - Buyers Guide

As promised, we’ll now walk you through the different things you might want to think about before you buy your food containers for freezing.

Usage

As a general rule, it’s great to get food containers that you can wash and use again and again.  The only exception might be when you want to gift a meal or treat to someone outside of your household.

Most food containers for freezing are also microwave safe, and some are even oven safe.  This is a great feature to look out for if you intend to make meals ahead of time, ready to simply heat up when hunger strikes.

This also means you save on dishwashing too, as you won’t need as many plates or bowls.

Design / Labeling

You don’t want to be left guessing what’s in your food container - especially if there are folks with food allergies in your household!  Most food containers for freezing are either transparent, so you can see exactly what’s in them and how appetizing they look - this is a great feature, and one that comes up again and again in our Top 5 picks.

Alternatively, many food containers for freezing allow you to either write directly on them or allow you to stick your own labels on.

Written labels can be very useful since they can allow you to differentiate between various similar-looking meals, or check that the food within hasn’t hit its 3-month frozen food cut-off point.

Unfortunately however written labels are liable to smudge when pushed around a freezer.  But not to worry, there is a way to indirectly “label” your foods, and that’s by using color coding in your food containers, as with our Number pick, the .

You can have different colors representing either who the food is for, or when it needs to be used up by.

If you want to add date labels to your food containers but are afraid you may forget the color-coding system, you can get handy little labels from Amazon.com.

Lid / Closure

The closure of your frozen food container is also an important feature.  This is particularly valuable when you have small items that you don’t want spilling everywhere, or if you have wet or marinated food that you don’t want leaking out, potentially contaminating other foods.

Furthermore, keeping your food air-tight or vacuum-sealed, although not necessarily essential, can really help your frozen food last much longer.  The less air that’s in your food container, the better, and you will avoid freezer burn (more on that later).

Vacuum-sealing your food makes it possible to keep food fresh up to 5 times longer.  If you want your food vacuum-sealed, then we can recommend our Number  pick, the .

Material Made From

As we mentioned earlier, it’s always good to go for transparent food containers for your frozen foods if possible.  And to that end, glass, plastic, and silicone containers make great candidates.

Glass containers are by far the most durable than their plastic counterparts and are decidedly less likely to be punctured or ripped when you’re washing the dishes.  They’re also more environmentally friendly than their plastic counterparts.

However glass containers are more cumbersome due to their additional weight and are not typically microwave safe, so you can’t take a glass container straight out of the freezer and into the fridge.

Silicone food containers are only partially transparent, but they have an advantage over single-use plastic freezer bags in that they can be washed and reused.

If you’re going to go for plastic containers, you should look out for ones that are BPA free.  Exposure to BPA is a concern because of the possible detrimental effects of BPA on the brain and prostate glands of infants and children, and worse still some scientific research suggests that it should be classified as a carcinogen.

Container Shape

The shape of your food container affects how much food you can fit in your freezer.  Square and rectangular shaped containers generally allow you to fit more food in your freezer than their tub-shaped counterparts.

With freezer bags meanwhile, you can often get the food to lay really flat, or you can squash food in a difficult corner.

However, you must be careful not to fill your freezer too full, as you need to allow air to circulate in it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is freezer burn and how do I avoid it?

Freezer burn is a condition that occurs when frozen food has been damaged by dehydration due to air reaching the food.

Chemical changes take place which causes the food to change color.  Technically food is still edible after freezer burn, but the texture and taste is not as it should be.

You can avoid freezer burn by keeping your food in airtight packaging.
