The answer is slightly complicated:
You can freeze the yolk of a boiled egg easily, storing it in the freezer for up to three months until you’re ready to eat it. However, the white of the egg isn’t as freezable, as it will turn rubbery and will be inedible after having been frozen.
So, can you freeze a hard boiled egg? Yes, but only partly.
How to freeze hard boiled eggs:
As freezing a boiled egg is slightly more complicated than simply throwing it in the freezer, we thought it would be useful to give you a step by step guide on how to do it correctly!
Although you could freeze the entire hard boiled egg, it’s best to only freeze the yolk. The white of the egg will turn rubbery when frozen, and will therefore be inedible.
However, it is completely up to you: you can freeze the hard boiled egg whole, peeled or unpeeled, or just the yolk.

Here is how to freeze a hard boiled egg (yolk only):
- First of all, you need to boil the egg (duh!) For freezing, it is always better to do a proper hard boiled egg instead of a soft boiled egg, as it will keep better.
- Once you’ve boiled the eggs, allow them to cool down.
- Next, it depends on the way you’re going to freeze them. If you’re freezing them whole, you can simply skip to the next step. However we recommend that you peel them and then separate the yolk from the egg white, to only freeze the yolk.
- Place the egg (or in this case the yolk of the egg) into a freezer-safe container or a freezer-safe bag. Then place into the freezer until frozen solid.
Pro tip: you can write the date on the bag or container so that you know exactly when you froze the boiled eggs. That way your freezer is organized, and you don’t leave them in there for too long!
- The hard boiled eggs can remain in the freezer for up to 6 months. After that, they might not taste as good and might eventually become inedible.
How to defrost hard boiled eggs:
Defrosting hard boiled eggs isn’t very hard, meaning it’s fairly simple to just grab one out of the freezer as an on the go snack.
Here are two ways to defrost your boiled egg, depending on how much of a hurry you’re in:
Thaw in the refrigerator:
This is a good way to defrost your hard boiled egg if you’re in no particular hurry.
Here is how you do it:
- Take the container or bag with your hard boiled eggs from the freezer, and palace in the refrigerator.
- Let it sit until completely defrosted. As it is in the refrigerator, this might take a while.
- Once defrosted completely, you can enjoy it as if it was fresh!
Thaw in cold water:
If you want to defrost your hard boiled egg a little faster, this is the way to do it!
- Place the hard boiled egg in a plastic bag that is completely sealed, and place it in a bowl of cold water, out at room temperature.
- The water will help quickly defrost the egg, and it’s safer than using hot water.
- Remove from the bag and enjoy as if fresh!
Once you’ve defrosted the hard boiled egg, it’s always a good idea to check that it’s okay, just in case. If it smells off in any way (with a rotten or sulfur smell), throw it away and play it safe. It’s best to go without your egg snack than to eat a rotten one, trust us!

Before you decide to go ahead and freeze your hard boiled eggs, you should consider whether you really need and want to, and think about exactly how you’re going to do it, ensuring it’s done correctly so that you can enjoy the eggs at a later date without any issues.
- Do you really need to freeze your hard boiled eggs?
If you’re the kind of person that prefers the white of the egg to the yolk, then freezing your hard boiled eggs might not be the best idea.
As the white of the egg can’t really be eaten after frozen, you will only be freezing the yolk, and therefore it might not be worth it for you!
- Make sure you date the hard boiled egg yolk, so you know when it was frozen. It will last up to 6 months perfectly fine, but any more time that might make it taste bad or go off when defrosted.
- A good idea when freezing hard boiled eggs is to freeze them individually in different bags, so that you can defrost them individually as a single snack! It might also help take up less space in your freezer, which is always a plus.
