Best Digital Electric Smoker Buying Guide
These are the things to consider before purchasing a new electric smoker for your backyard.
We think that cooking a little more in bulk and storing the extra is a smart move and a major time saver. So when in doubt, we like to overcook.
But not everyone has the space for a larger appliance, the time to cook the extra, or other reasons to be particular about the size of their smoker.
The main consideration when it comes to the size of the smoker is the size of what you’re cooking. A full-size turkey needs a slightly different overall rack size than a small salmon fillet, for example. Consider the width of the smoker before purchasing. I mean, if you have your heart set on smoked ribs but your smoker is even 4 inches too narrow, you’re going to kick yourself.
Generally, a 40-inch model will suit most everyone’s needs.
Do you want to be able to add more wood chips without opening the main door? What about being able to check the temperature quickly and without a separate gadget? What about being able to control the thing from your phone?
Again, depending on what you’ll most often be putting in your smoker, you’ll have to decide which features are the most important to you, especially considering more features usually equates to higher price.
Bonus features to consider include:
- Side access wood chip tray
- Temperature probes and/or built-in thermometers (meat probes)
- Control panel features (set internal temperature, set cook time, etc)
- Built-in handles for portability
- Remote control (Bluetooth, in some cases)
- Adjustable racks vs. stationary racks
You can go ahead and get the cheapest one on the market and chances are good you’ll still end up with meat that’s cooked and safe to eat. It likely won’t be the best-smoked meat you’ve ever had, though.
You’ll likely end up in the range of $200+ to get a solid, reliable, quality option. You’ll likely be double that (or more) to get a high-quality model with Bluetooth capability.
Portability (vs. your needs)
If you’ve got your eye on one of the smaller, more portable options on our list, consider this: just because it’s smaller or lighter weight doesn’t make it as portable as you might want. The one drawback of electric smokers is that they DO require electricity to run them.
If you want to take one camping, for example, you’d better either power it off your camper or take a good generator with you.
Ease of Cleaning
If it’s a can-style smoker and does not disassemble much (if at all) then cleaning the bottom of a bucket, essentially, is not going to be a fun time.
Alternatively, some of the larger smokers with large doors may be great for reaching all the internal corners, but check how those parts can be cleaned and how many tiny nooks and crannies there may be around door seals to clean after each use.
Be sure that the racks are durable enough to stand up to regular cleaning and possible scrubbing if any pieces of fat or meat stick to the racks. It’s important to keep your smoker clean and dry between each use, since you don’t want crossover of lingering smells and flavors, and you definitely don’t want any mildew growth in a closed, moist environment!
Whatever smoker you choose to buy, you want to make sure it’s one that suits YOUR needs and expected use. It doesn’t do you any good to buy an extra-large smoker that holds 3 or 4 turkeys, like the Masterbuilt 20072115 Electric Smoker, if you’re smoking for only 1-2 people at a time.
Regardless of the size of the smoker, all of the options above will be adequate to get you the smoked finish to your meat or other foods without much issue. You’ll be ready to get cooking in no time, and you can count on reliable performance.
But buying one with extra room to smoke in bulk and store the finished product for winter, for example, now there’s an idea to keep you eating summertime flavors all year long!
